What the anxiety cycle looks like

Anxiety is designed to protect you. When your mind perceives a threat — real or imagined — it triggers the fight-or-flight response. Your heart rate increases, your breathing shallows, your muscles tense. This system evolved to help humans respond to physical danger.

The problem is that this same system fires in response to perceived social threat, uncertainty, and psychological discomfort. A job interview, a difficult conversation, an upcoming event — these trigger the same physiological response as genuine danger, even when there is no genuine danger at all.

The relief trap

When anxiety spikes, avoidance feels like the obvious solution. You cancel the plans. You avoid the conversation. You stay quiet in the meeting. Immediately, anxiety reduces. The relief is real and immediate.

But here is what avoidance teaches your brain: that the thing you avoided was genuinely dangerous, and that escape was the right response. The next time a similar situation arises, anxiety arrives earlier and more intensely — because the brain has learned that this situation is a threat worth fleeing from.

Over time, the range of situations that trigger anxiety expands. What began as discomfort in one context gradually spreads. This is not a character flaw — it is the predictable result of a learning process working exactly as designed, just toward the wrong outcome.

Safety behaviours

A related concept is safety behaviours — the things we do inside a situation to reduce anxiety. Checking your phone repeatedly in social situations. Over-preparing for every meeting. Staying close to an exit. Seeking constant reassurance from others.

Safety behaviours feel protective, but they prevent you from discovering that the situation would have been manageable without them. They maintain the belief that the situation is dangerous, and that you cannot cope without the safety net.

What breaks the cycle

The evidence-based approach is gradual, planned exposure — entering the feared situation, without avoidance or safety behaviours, and staying long enough for anxiety to naturally reduce. This is not recklessness. It is a carefully designed learning experience that gives the brain new information: that the situation is manageable, and that you can cope.

This is not comfortable initially. Anxiety increases when you first face a feared situation without escaping. But when you remain, anxiety reduces on its own. This process, repeated over multiple exposures, gradually changes the brain's learned response.
